Synthesist Paul Schilling shared this look at recreating a classic Stevie Wonder GX-1 patch on the Deckard’s Dream.
Here’s what he has to say about it:
A walkthrough of my recreation of Stevie Wonder’s “Village Ghetto Land” GX-1 string ensemble on the Deckard’s Dream synth, with plenty of audio examples.
The Deckard goes beyond what the CS-80 can do, for example by offering PWM LFO sync across all voices and layers (which very few synths offer) and which adds a vibrant airy ensemble-type feel.
Also the Deckard lets you reverse the polarity of the high-pass filter envelopes, so that it behaves either like the GX-1 (HP and LP filters open/close together) or like the CS-80 (they go the opposite way from each other)
The tone of sound looks like a variation of the DX7’s preset sound ” Orchestra “.
Blade, you are really risking the wrath of the analog-philes here, with that statement.
I agree there are some similarities, in that it allows you to have different layers of sound with different timbres and envelopes.
Love this .. especially the Kate Bush reference. Never connected these to songs. Who knew?
Sounds great. It’s just refreshing to hear someone playing nice chords on a synth, which is oddly rare in these days of cutoff knob jockeys.
Thanks Scott!
“Cutoff knob jockeys” – that’s awesome :))
