What’s Elektron Introducing At Superbooth 2019?

Ahead of Superbooth 2019, Elektron shared this teaser video for something new, noting only that ‘Restrictions are for the dreamless’.

Expect details later this week. In the meantime, check out the video and share your thoughts in the comments!

      1. Though your joking may be aside, it’s still kind of funny. I have a BCR2000 and I do think it is a marvelous piece of gear. Amazing value!!

My only gripe is its lack of foot CC’s– (which is something that is true of MOST MIDI control surfaces).

        1. It is also over-sized, not the best looking (there are some cool modified ones to be seen on the web, but the chassi isn’t always rebuilt meaning the size is still over the top).
And it would have been great to have a magnetic system for flexible naming, where one could just print labels and attached to something similar to fridge magnets. Or for complete overlays (for which it would have been great if it was flat).
It would have also been great to see a more “modular” approach, where there were units that only had the rotary section, but there could be a single control unit, for controlling presets, and then a link system (via midi or additional connector). A bit like the iCon Pro Platform system.
If someone did something like that, one could build a midi mixer with more rotaries above the faders then just the single, or maximum 3, that are on offer today.
Or set up a massive control panel on a keyboard for building a synth controller with all the option one may want.
(I would love to set up Omnisphere, with a 4 osc + dual filter, where one is the OB-6 type with mode modulation, typical LFO and envelopes +LFOs dedicated to control other LFOs, and have my dream synth with a hardware panel that is pre labeled… I’m yet to have even omnisphere, I’m in the building process of the computer, but my budget is restricted)

          1. For what it does the size is about right. If you make it smaller, it suddenly becomes less easy to use. The Novation Zero SL Mkii was about the same size, and had a few enhanced features over the BCR2000.

There are several tiny control surfaces (unfortunately USB only, no 5-pin din) out there. I get why they would be nice in terms of real estate, but not in actual use.

            1. for those who can afford it and have the skills to build it, there is now the MidiBox / midiphy SEQ V4+ … in principle a powerful hardware sequencer (maybe the most powerful) it can also be loaded with the MidiBox NG software to produce a MIDI controller of similar format as the Zero SL MkII but way more powerful! 16 encoders + a plethora of super nice mechanical switches. disclaimer is nobody has written the ultimate controller template for it YET – but it’s simple scripting and there is already a testing template accessing all the switches.

            2. So you are saying it needs bo be that thick? That it needs that front lip? That it needs the curved sides? And if they made it flat, that they could not have moved to top part closer to the upmost row on encoders on the lower part?

I’m not sure what tiny control surfaces you refer to.. There are some with pots, without LEDs.

I never said that the controls should be smaller, or that there should not be enough space between the controls (even the BCR2000, is a bit tight between the controls on the same row).

      2. I went with the Mackie C4 when considering a midi controller of the type. Having the screen with he names and values was super helpful setting it up with Reason. Couldn’t see myself trying to control multiple devices without know which knob was set up to which parameter. But the BCR was the lower cost alternative for sure.

        1. I’m sure a lot of people would want a rotary controller interface, with one-color or multi-color OLED screens with good visibility. If Behringer could do it at a budget, I’m sure it would be even more popular than the BCR-2000. For many BCR-2000 was the only thing on offer.

  1. I’m still in the cool down of the last buildup to nothing. The teasing and puzzle trail they left on the elektronauts was fun.
Probably they keep building the low end portfolio, that is cool for some but boring for me unfortunately.
Maybe a few years of patience until they release there next big machine.

    1. Aha-ha, big machine from Elektron? Mnm2? Are you seriously? Maybe half of model-sample, with one half of one OSC, with no modulation… with 8 step knobs? With arp with up-down, and no presets.) future already coming! 21th century…

  2. A video sampler? Wishful thinking, but why is no-one making a hardware multitrack video sampler/sequencer, like a modern version of the Korg Kaptivator.

  3. I think it’s about the battery pack for that little sample player they came up with. Batteries….no restrictions on when and where

    1. There are those adapters that can power devices using a USB batterypack.
But there are a lot of rules and regulations when it comes to batteries, when exporting/importing, so apparently it is a bit too messy for most companies to get in to.

  4. model:synth … hopefully!
? new 8 voice keyboard synth jenk has hinted on at one of his presetnations.
? digitone keys like thomann have hinted in their search (but might be an error)

… a battery when everyone else shows their latest synth? oh come on 😉

    1. Well I’ve seen Cenk do a demo using a digitakt with a batterypack they happened to have, while he still needed to hook up to the PA system, it was still impressive.

  5. if its a digitone keys, “restrictions” better mean the damned nerfed FM ratios. If they bring out another DN with nerfed ratios im going to have a sad day.. add a microtuning while you at it 😉

    1. i would love to see a full size elektron workstation that combines octatrack with the analog keys (but 8 voices) and the digitone. i would pay a lot for that.

      j

      0=0

  6. If restrictions are for the dreamless, so Elektron will upgrade the model:sample, the digitone and the digitakt with chain mode or song mode that can be saved.

  7. i look forward to a *digital* keys, with lots of polyphony. 8-part-multitimbral at least. make a decent workstation, elektron.

  8. maybe they’ve finally solved the OT conundrum – a totally capable machine that doesn’t require its users to bifurcate their left brain from their right brain and then automagically repair the damage through music

  9. I’m impressed by their recent releases, esp the Model Samples, because it seems like they’re finally figuring out usability.

If they could take that ease of use and bring to something as deep as the Octatrack or Analog Keys, it would be beyond amazing.

  10. I would love to see a hardware that quickly samples the sound of another hardware, makes is chromatic and polyphonic.
With midi and possibly a few CV outs, to do the sampling automatically and if it also can be set up to sample a few parameters, that would be even better.
    And sample export option.

The Polyfier / Polynator or something like that. (even though it could also be used on a polyhonic hardware just for sampling it)

I wish that was what the Model:Sample was, because a product like that would be really useful.
And it would break the monophonic restriction.

“Restriction are for the dreamless” sounds like som sort of collaboration with Expert Sleepers.

It could I guess perhaps also be something with the abbreviation R.E.M.
Rhythmic (sequencable) Effects Mixer… something I’ve been hoping they would to for years.

  11. Restrictions are for the dreamless ? Yet every recently released Elektron product is more restricted than the previous…. makes you wonder.

  12. Just got the email, its a digitone Keys. Looks like they glued a digitone to a keyboard in the style of the monomachine keys. Thought it would look cooler.

  13. Octatrack is really not user friendly at all and not that fun to use. But Digitakt and Digitone are a super pleasure and very easy to use. If only the Digitakt could do auto time stretching like Octatrack, I’d have no need for the Octatrack. …maybe that is why they didn’t add it. …I’d like to see a MK3 Octa with a total redesign.
