At Superbooth 2019, Korg gave us an overview and demo of their new volca nubass vacuum tube synthesizer.
The volca nubass is a bassline synthesizer, implemented with Korg’s NuTube, an updated vacuum tube design. The NuTube technology is implemented into the oscillator, sub oscillator and drive circuits.
Pricing and Availability
The new volca nubass is expected to be available in August 2019, at a price of $199.99. See the Korg site for more info.
how does this compare to a volca bass through a ‘real tube’ pre-amp?
From what I understand (I’m no expert), the fact that the tube works at oscillator level, contributing to producing the sound itself, might result in more possibilities than “just” using a tube at the end.
Thanks for the video. Does the post-filter drive also use the tube?
This actually impressed me a lot more than I thought it would. It sounds surprisingly ‘acidy and to get that for volca prices is a steal.
Don’t forget that an early Korg – Electribe was tube-based !
No, you could just run the output through a tube at the end for distortion. It wasn’t anything very sophisticated, even at the time.
noob bass
I get confused why manufactures continually try to push ‘bass’ synths which clearly don’t output any bass character, just squelch. if they are making acid synths that’s almost a lead, and they program them with lead-line style notes as used here. Like, a bass should have some heft to it and be suitable for a ‘bass line’ type bass if you asked me, or call it something else.
The Novation – Bass station (1+2) are good at both bass and lead lines.
