The latest Red Means Recording episode takes a look at the Elektron Analog Heat MKII.
The Elektron Analog Heat MKII is a stereo saturation, distortion, and filtering effect unit, capable of everything from subtle enhancement to absolute destruction.
Details on the Analog Heat are available at the Elektron site.
I reckon using a decent analogue mixer beats this hands down. A small mackie can give us this overdrive no problem.
I reckon you don’t know anything about this unit, or that you’re a troll. A small mixer gives you one flavor of overdrive and 3-band, fixed EQ. The Heat gives you 8 flavors of overdrive/distortion/fuzz, envelopes, LFOs, CV control, presets, multi-mode filters, 2-band EQ, VST control, and it’s an audio interface.
What he said? plus it has expression pedal control, footswitch and cv control, stereo panning modulation, overbridge support, user presets, midi implementation, drive control, wet dry blend. Frankly, the above comment shows a real ignorance to understand anything about the Analog Heat before commenting. This is a detailed review, at least watch the thing first before making silly comments
8 800,00 SEK = 89,590.28 USD? Think I’ll pass!
It’s 8800 SEK which is around $896.
Dot and comma have a different meaning in different places.
This thing could be really cool at about $300 bucks. But, $900 bucks?? For a fancy overdrive unit??
8 different types of saturation/overdrive in ‘stereo’, a stereo analog filter, analog EQ, LFO, Envelope follower and of course Overbridge so its a high quality soundcard and capable of apply those effects over USB like a plugin (as well as live, and with CV and midi control etc.) – there are not many analog stereo units like this that can be put on the master buss (Sherman filter bank maybe, but that costs more)
Bit more than a fancy overdrive, and its been out over a year- I picked one up for 500 GBP new.
All that extra functionality is what I meant by “fancy” 🙂 That’s still jaw droppingly expensive. Its not that it doesn’t have a few more bells and whistles than other decent sounding stereo overdrive pedals, it’s just…how useful is that stuff in an analog distortion unit? Useful enough to justify that asking price? At least they could make the demos a bit more exciting?
What, at $300 (or $500), approaches the functionality of the Analog Heat? If you want a $300 fancy overdrive unit, they’re out there. This is certainly out of my price range, but it’s one of a kind.
I bought a used ml1 second hand for about £300-£320 I think. It’s doesnt have the larger screen in order to visualise LFOs which is no real drawback not the mono in to stereo out which can be resolved simply with a Y cable. I think the only other difference is the mk2 buttons. Well worth the £300
Sorry bruv, this one ain’t made by slaves. Look elsewhere for $300 kit.
I had the first one, it definitely adds some good color to your audio, but the price was just absurd for what it did. Since its release, I’ve been waiting for an FX unit with steps, to lock different parameters and get crazy with just FX. Already ding it on the octatrack, but it would be nice to have a dedicated Elektron FX box.
Would have been greate to have that on this box instead of the envelope follower. Could program sweeping filters manually with steps.
Lol Are they smoking crack or does this come with crack? Elektron is pricey, sure. A fuckin dirt box for $800??? What’s next? Are they going to manufacture a synthesizer and then claim they are not a synthesizer manufacturer, just a design group that designs and manufactures synthesizers?
This thing (at least the mk I) has been out for a few years. People that have them use them and like them. We’re spoiled these days….look at the prices (adjusted for inflation) of synths from the 70s and 80s.
Any good modern VST distortion plugin will sound even better
I was really sceptical too but as soon as I got it I realized I would never sell it. It’s a very mature colouration unit in every sense. I still have my Zvex Fuzz Factory, DS1 and OCD and some great plugins (NI Driver is AWESOME) for other duties, but for production, this unit is untouchable. Made for grown ups.
+1 for overpriced.
I also think it’s a bit disingenuous to sell an $800 sampler that requires an $800 analog circuit companion to not sound cold and lifeless.
My workaround was OTO Boum which is just a little cheaper, but way, way cooler.
Yeah totally – same for all those electric guitars that need all those pedals to sound warm 😛
More seriously though, a sampler sounds as warm as whatever it samples, right? And the Digitakt DOES sound warm, and has a saturation circuit built in.
I love my digitakt and digitone and would love to have the analog heat but I just can’t justify the price.
I’d be all over it at $300.
