In this video, musician and instrument designer Roger Linn demonstrates his collection of patches for Surge Synthesizer, an open source software synth that’s available for Linux, Mac & Windows.
Linn has been a long-time advocate for expressive instruments and software synths, and helped pioneer the MPE specification. Surge supports MPE and has a deep set of sound design options.
Surge offers a powerful architecture, offering 3 oscillators per voice, with 8 versatile oscillator algorithms: Classic, Sine, Wavetable, Window, FM2, FM3, S/H Noise and Audio input.
Linn demonstrates his sounds he created for the upcoming Surge 1.6.4 release and how they work with the Linnstrument.
You can find out more via the Surge site and Roger Linn’s site.
Thanks for sharing Synthtopia.
When will Roger Linn come with some new hardware?
Cool guy. Not sure I would be able to play Liinstrument, but happy to see that this type of controller exists.
The isomorphic layout’s actually super easy to get your head around. It’s actually available on a lot of grid based controllers if you want to give it a shot.
A bit easier with ones that aren’t on a touch screen since you get the tactile sense of where the edges are.
It’s a shame a humble genius like Linn has to live his elder years in the climate of Uli Behringer.
Not really, Behringer is making clones while Mr. Linn invents new hardware.
But I think Mr. Linn, soon should move on from this 5 years old released instrument.
No thanks, I’m an owner, I appreciate continued support.
Yes, in in my opinion and if Roland and Korg was running the same business model, then they would have been out of business many years ago š
maybe he should find somebody else to demo the thing.
roli does such nice mpe demos.
here its one cat meow ofter the other.
Jordan Rudes comes to mind .. that guy is a virtuoso on MPE instruments.
Linn put together a compilation video of excerpts from user videos, showing a variety of different way of using it, different music styles, different synths. It’s about 12 minutes long:

(And Jordan Rudess is in there too.)
Horrible .. hurts my ears like someone running their finger nails down a chalk board š Had to turn it off after about the third patch. I have much respect for Linn being a boomer age keyboard player who grew up with his drum machines .. but this just hits a wrong nerve .. literally.
Continuation of above as I ran out of edit time, so it could just be my hearing which has developed pretty bad tinnitus this past year as well as hyperacusis. Iām glad Roger is still active and motivated at his age instead of just giving up as so many do when they pass 60. God bless Roger.
