Ableton has announced that this year’s Loop Summit is being postponed until April 2021 because of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Loop is a periodic ‘summit for music makers’ that offers three days of talks, performances and workshops. The event was scheduled to return to Berlin April 24-26, 2020.
The pandemic has resulted in the cancellation or postponement of multiple music industry events, including SxSW, Musikmesse 2020 and Synthplex 2020.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can be easily spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, that was first identified in Wuhan, China. On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern”. Yesterday, they declared it a pandemic – an epidemic that has spread globally.
Here is Ableton’s statement on postponing this year’s Loop Summit:
Covid-19: Loop Summit for Music Makers postponed until April 2021
We have taken the decision to postpone the Loop Summit until April 2021.
The health and safety of our attendees is our concern above all else. The Berlin Health Administration has already announced a ban on large-scale events until mid-April 2020. Given the international nature of our event, we are not confident that we can ensure well-being to a level that is acceptable for us to deliver Loop in six weeks’ time. We are deeply saddened to be forced to take this step but consider it essential in the face of the ongoing viral outbreak, and the guidance we have received from authorities.
Alongside health considerations, we’re mindful of travel restrictions/cancellations as the situation develops globally. We cannot accept a Loop that is any less than what you expect from us, and we do not want to push forward at the expense of those who cannot make it through no fault of their own.
We sincerely hope that all those who planned to attend Loop can reschedule plans to join us in 2021. We’re fixing dates with our venues, and have begun a dialog with all of our partners, artists and speakers, all of whom we hope to rebook.
We’ve developed a wonderful program that we’re proud of and our aim is to deliver in April 2021 the same Loop that we’ve been devoted to for the last 18 months.
Though it cannot relieve the inconvenience this will no doubt cause many of you, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported Loop – ticket holders, all those we’ve booked and their representatives. We humbly ask for patience as we manage the transition to a new date, and support the needs of all those affected by this change.
See the Ableton site for details.
Editors: small typo in first sentence.
Ableton’s doing the right thing, but also the only thing since I don’t think it was legally or economically possible to proceed.
Delaying a full year is a good move since it may take that long for this situation to finalize. This is unlikely to be over by June or July, despite claims by certain politicians that nothing needs to be done it’s just a minor sniffles and will be gone by spring. We are seeing right now in Italy what happens when they run out of hospital resources. The CFR starts to grow. It’s now approaching 7% there as they triage patients. Retired with any preexisting conditions? You’re left to die because there simply aren’t enough respirators. Give the treatment to the 30 yr old with 2 small kids. This outcome is coming to Germany and the US and other countries that won’t suspend the Constitution and institute total quarantine, while massively investing in ramping up of necessary new hospitals, respirators, wide spread testing etc. None of this is being done because “it’s just the flu, no one’s ever died of that”.
If you want to survive don’t wait for your government to save you. That won’t happen. Self quarantine. Cancel all travel. Minimize contacts. Maintain distance. Always wear a mask when going out. Masks work. Every study proves that. The government is lying about masks.
Can you clarify and back up your statement that masks work? What are you saying masks prevent? What kind of masks are you referring to? Can you back up this up with reliable sources?
Because from this article:
https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/01/25/799007842/coronavirus-faqs-do-masks-help-is-the-disease-really-so-mysterious
“But there’s little evidence to suggest that the face masks worn by members of the public prevent people from being infected by breathing in the virus, says William Schaffner, a professor in the division of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. “There really are no good, solid, reliable data.”
According to the CDC, the kind of flimsy masks that people often buy in pharmacies may not tightly fit the face, so the wearer can still breathe in air — and infected droplets.”
> that people buy in pharmacies
At my pharmacy I bought both n95 and surgical masks over a month ago. Pharmacies sell good masks.
Surgical masks don’t provide as much protection it’s thought. Except studies show they do.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/09/190903134732.htm
Summary: The study reported ‘no significant difference in the effectiveness’ of medical masks vs. N95 respirators for prevention of influenza or other viral respiratory illness.
You are free to not wear a mask and increase your chances of exposure. That is your right in the US to do so. In some other countries, one is not free to not wear a mask and failure to wear a mask is a crime. That is the right choice if one wants their population to survive.
You must not know much about the USA, if you think the Constitution can somehow (or should) be suspended. We are in this together.
you must not know much about the usa or the constitution if you’ve never heard of martial law.
There won’t be Martial Law. Stop spreading panic. Be a part of the solution.
meanwhile: andreas schneider of superbooth still undecided. lmao. even cheeto jesus in the white house has heard the shot!
The decision has long been made by others – The city of Berlin has prohibited all events with more than 1000 guests. There is no chance SuperBooth or anything else takes place here in the next 3 months. It’s a pity, but it’s necessary.
> The decision has long been made by others
schneider´s position hasn´t changed so far: “We have decided to keepon working on the finalization of this year’s Superbooth.”

They have not made a statement yet, but I can assure you everything is shutting down in Berlin right now. Universities, libraries, museums, galleries, concert venues, theaters, more and more schools, public buildings of all kinds, all events with larger crowds like festivals, trade shows, parades, sport events. Senat is discussing to close down all clubs and bars as well tomorrow morning. Even on the very off chance that SuperBooth will still take place as planned in April (which it simply can’t), rarely anyone could attend because of travel restrictions. Perhaps we can hope they will at least turn it into an online event or something like that.
Cheeto Jesus….that is brilliant. Thank you!
thanks, but not mine. in the course of a twitter rant back in 2016, never trumper rick wilson coined the nickname, which fast became a meme. my favorite: comrade trumpski
He’s just trying to get his insurance paperwork squared away before the announcement.
hahahaha ‘cheeto jesus’. good one man
Berlin is on hold till the 19th of April for more then 1000 people ,.. superbooth is a bit more than a week later…
Hoping it will go through,.. but i would not be surprised if not ..
