The Sequential Circuits Prophet 20 (Prophet 10 x 2) Is ‘Ridiculous & Awesome’

Philadelphia synth repair company Bell Tone Synth Works founder Alison Stout shared this video, discussing a challenging project, repairing a classic Sequential Circuit Prophet 10.

Then she MIDI’d the repaired synth with another rare Prophet 10 synth to create a ‘Prophet 20’, which is, as she describes it, ‘ridiculous & awesome’.

The sound demonstration starts at 6:42 in.

Here’s what she has to say about the video:

“I finally finished the lengthy and labor-intensive restoration of the second of two vintage Sequential Circuits Prophet 10s recently restored by my workshop Bell Tone Synth Works, and couldn’t wait to MIDI chain them together to create the PROPHET 20! I made this video showing off what the monster setup sounds like as well as describing the restoration process. One of them had suffered an apocalyptic power supply failure and then apparently been run for quite some time in that state, and dozens of logic chips had been destroyed, making for a very challenging troubleshooting process.

Working on incredible vintage synths every day has demystified a lot of them for me, to the point that sadly, my reaction to a lot of even the coolest synths is something like “yeah, it’s pretty good I guess.”

But this setup was so incredible-sounding and enjoyable to play that I was literally running around the house shouting about how awesome it was in between when I was playing it! I felt a level of joy and wonder that I haven’t felt from playing a particular synth(s) in a while. All it means is that I guess I’ve become desensitized to the absurd degree that only $24K worth of synth with 244 keys and 40 oscillators impresses me… it’s like, one of the hardest possible drugs as far as polysynths are concerned! Pretty ridiculous when you think of it that way.

While we wait for them to get picked up by their owners, I’m continuing to test them (wink wink)…”

  1. I’d like 128 Soundfont variants of all the presets for $50, please. “The Prophet-20 Ohmigod Gargantuasm!”

  2. Alison and Darien at Bell Tone Synth Works did an outstanding job restoring a Juno 106 and resurrecting a Korg DW8000 for me earlier this year! They are EXTREMELY knowledgable about synth hardware and are super passionate about what they do.
