Tangerine Dream – Against The Clock

The latest episode of Fact Magazine’s Against The Clock series features Tangerine Dream.

The featured lineup, Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane and Ulrich Schnauss is the final version of the band organized by founder Edgar Froese. The group recently added synthesist Paul Fricke to the lineup.

Against The Clock is a series where artists get 10 minutes in the studio to come up with something.

Episode Summary:

Tangerine Dream is one of the most enduring electronic acts of the 20th century. Formed by Edgar Froese in 1967, the act went through multiple iterations but came to define a generation of ambient and new age music whose influence can still be heard on film scores and synth albums today.

Although Froese died in 2015, the band still performs under the stewardship of Thorsten Quaeschning, who joined the band under Froese in 2003. On this episode of Against The Clock, Quaeschning is joined by Hoshiko Yamane and Ulrich Schnauss, who combine synth, violin and guitar to make a track in 10 minutes.

Tangerine Dream’s latest album, Recurring Dreams – a collection of new versions of classic Tangerine Dream tracks – is available now.

  1. Not so much beat the clock as jam for 10 minutes, but who’s complaining…

Though it would have been cool to observe their process in making a more composed composition.

  2. Loved TD since the very early 80’s, and was more the then a little concerned when I discovered that they had to desided to carry on after Edgar Froese sadley left us. I have to say though the stuff that has released since his lose has been excellent.
They have really won me over, and that is a pleasent surprise.
Shame it was only 10 minutes, it felt like they were just getting into there stride!!!!

  3. Beautiful work, as usual, changes or not. I’m big fan of Ulrich Schnauss’s solo works. I’m perfectly happy to see T-Dream continue until the last Froese acolyte kacks it.

However, that modular is plugged to the bone! It’s like kissing an octopus. I know what many of the functions are about, but its a world all its own past the starter level. I could live with a modest 8-to-12-slot modular for ambient stuff and sequences, but more than that and you can become a Euro-junkie fast.

  4. Nice to get a close up view of how they work!

This is similar to what they’ve been doing with their improvised sessions. I’d like to see them get into edgier territory, but they certainly do the lush ambient sounds and sequences well.

This is one of their best lineups ever. All three of them are doing interesting solo work, and they each bring something unique to the group’s sound.

Best of all, no sax solos or bongos!

  5. Well, if Tangerine Dream can’t get their studio to not be a mess of wires and ridiculousness, I guess I should stop feeling bad about mine.

Is that the Quantum he’s using underneath the Roland System 8?

  6. TANGERINE DREAM ON THE MOVIE SCIRE,OOK FOR IT ON YOUTUBE. If you ever want to Watch movie ” HEARTBREAKERS” with Nick Mancuso and Peter Coyote in 1984 set in Los Angeles. DO NOTCONFUSE THE TITLE ” HEARTBREAKERS” WITH THE SIGOURNEY WEAVER MOVIE IE.

  7. Thorsten is using a plectrum, it’s clearly shown it several shots – he then uses a more touch guitar technique so is holding the plectrum in his hand but no using it
