Junkie XL On His Massive Buchla Modular System

Composer and synthesist Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, has restarted his Studio Time video series, where he offers a behind-the-scenes look at the tools and techniques he users in doing his work.

It’s been several years since his last season of Studio Time. And in that time, Holkenborg sold off most of the gear in his LA studio, and has set up a new studio in his birth country of The Netherlands, in Amsterdam.

In this video, Holkenborg gives a tour of his massive Buchla modular system. He doesn’t demo the system’s audio capabilities – apparently, that’s coming in future videos – but he discusses the modules in his system and what they do, how the ‘boats’ work with one another, and his thinking behind choosing each module.

If you’re wondering what he does with all of those synths, check out the interview Junkie XL & The Art Of Scoring With Synthesizers. There, Holkenborg discusses ‘Modular Sunday’, and how he uses his modular system to create material that he shapes further in Cubase as raw material for his scores.

  1. I know I’m not a good candidate for a Buchla, because when I see a system like this, I don’t think “infinite possibilities,” I think “raging OCD” and “divorce fuel.” If anyone can crack it, its Tom. His soundtracks have big biceps.

    1. Yeah mentioned in the previous video that he had sold all his old gear and one of the things he bought with the money was the Buchla system

His reason being that he had yet to properly get to know the Buchla system
