Cakewalk Now Exclusively Available With A BandLab Membership

Cakewalk has announced that Cakewalk Next and Cakewalk Sonar have exited public beta and are now available worldwide exclusively through BandLab Membership:

  • Cakewalk Next is the latest addition to the Cakewalk family. Available for both Mac and Windows, Cakewalk Next is designed to “streamline the music creation process without compromising features or performance”.
  • Cakewalk Sonar is the evolution of Cakewalk by BandLab. Cakewalk Sonar provides a comprehensive suite of tools, including new features and a fully redesigned UI and high DPI support. Sonar is available for Windows only.

BandLab Membership provides a base offering of artist services like music distribution, fan engagement tools and promotional opportunities. Additionally, Members also enjoy early access to exclusive new tools and features from creation to social.

The integration provides additional tools, including third-party VST support, unlimited tracks, and a 64-bit mix engine. This complements the existing capabilities of BandLab Studio, which remains free for all users.

  1. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure Cakewalk used to be a free DAW.
In fact, I know it was because I have it and have used it.
Why move to a subscription model? It makes no sense to me.
I’m never, never, going to subscribe to a DAW.
Now if you made it available to purchase rather than the previous freeware model then I would’ve understood and maybe even bought it.
I don’t think you’ve read the room at all here Bandlab!

  2. They’re also doing kind of a sleezy thing of saying Free all over the place to refer to the first 3 months. Hard pass.
