The Oberheim OB-x8 Is ‘A Certified Modern Classic’

The latest Miles Away video takes a look at the Oberheim OB-X8 synthesizer, with V2 firmware.

He describes the OB-X8 as “a certified modern classic”, calling out its updated synthesis capabilities, MPE support, binaural synthesis implementation and – most of all – its sound.

He’s especially taken with the OB-X8’s binaural synthesis capability, which uses two synth voices to independently generate left and right audio signals, creating “an absolutely amazing three-dimensionality and stereo width.”

  1. I’m pretty sure the sound is amazing in its stereo width, in this binaural mode. I have two Pro-800 I use the same way (same sound on both, played simultaneously on same MIDI channel,, one panned hard left, the other hard right)and it yields the same amazement.

    1. But, to be frank, I give more credibility to Miles’ Away’s opinion than to yours. It’s my subjective take on the matter, yours might differ, but just giving my voice to show that his take doesn’t fall on futile ground.

      Cordially!

      1. I value John’s opinion more, his insights on the Korg Prologue, his perspective on ui’s unaligned knobs and color blindness sets new standard.
While “Miles Away” claims that a replica of one of the most famous classic synths is a “certified classic”, he also points out that subscribing to his channel is free.
        Nice work watson..

  2. “Modern classic” smells a bit like sales jargon when most Oberheims can support the title. Its the ultimate slab OB like the Eight-Voice is Tom’s ultimate modular. What could you possibly add to this one to “improve” it? 9″ touch screen? Naw, its a balls-out performance synth as much as a studio item. Its near-perfect for both jobs.

+1 about serious L/R panning. I bought pairs of several synths along the way so I could do exactly that. When you get it right, it sounds like the mega-sci-fi synth you hoped just one would be. Its far easier & cheaper to do now. Tabletop synths, I’m looking at you. I heart those little buggers.

    1. I do that double tracking guitars too.
2 takes of the sames strumming pattern guitar part. One panned left the other right.
No delay or reverb required. 😉

      Exactly.

But whenever Synthtopia mentions ‘binaural synthesis’, it seems like there are some people that freak out and act like it’s marketing hype.

‘Binaural synthesis’ is like double tracking, but with the added ability to modulate the channels differently. It sounds great and takes sounds to another level. It’s cool on leads and pads, but probably not the way to go for bass and other sounds.
