Magerit has introduced the KOLORA, a new Eurorack module that they describe as “a complete synth palette’ in 42HP.
The Magerit KOLORA features two oscillators (one analog and one digital), two VCAs, two LFOs, a 4-pole state-variable filter (VCF), three noise generators, an envelope generator, a sequencer, a mixer, and several additional utilities, including an active multiple and an OR/AND logic mixer.
Magerit KOLORA Walkthrough:
Features:
- A complete palette – two oscillators (one analog and one digital), two VCAs, two LFOs, a state-variable filter, three noise generators, an envelope, a sequencer, a mixer, and additional utilities such as an active multiple and a logical AND/OR mixer (known as a Boolean mixer).
- Analog and digital oscillators – One oscillator is based around the legendary 3340 chip, a temperature-stabilized oscillator core offering linear and exponential FM, pulse width modulation, hard sync, and four waveforms—sine, triangle, saw, and pulse. The other oscillator is a wavetable synth with up to 16 different waveforms. You can upload your own, too.
- Noise options – a noise generator featuring three different flavors: classic white and pink noises, and a clocked LFSR noise, similar to the sounds found in old video game consoles.
- Amplify and Modulate – Two VCAs, two LFOs, and one ADSR envelope generator are included in this module, allowing modulation with sine, triangle, or square waves. The amplifier can be modulated or even used without any CV input.
- Patterns – KOLORA also features an 8-stage step sequener.
- Filter – KOLORA has a 4-pole state-variable filter with three simultaneous responses: Low Pass, Band Pass, and High Pass. Furthermore, it is self-oscillating, so you can play melodies by inputting a V/OCT signal into its CUTOFF input.
- Mix and Utility – the module also features an active mixer and additional utilities, such as a buffered active multiple and Boolean OR/AND logic operators.
Pricing and Availability:
The Magerit KOLORA is available now for $515 USD.
“a complete synth palette” tha’t s a new one. not really ‘grabby’ though is it? not something a guy might GRAB. for fun, or whatever.
truly awful promo video, but really amazing looking device. an integrated sequencer is a lovely touch in a full voice unit.
Cool. Another bleep-box. Just a few more features, more than 8 steps (why is this a thing with Eurorack, btw) and it’s almost a usable synth. Oh wait, we were here before in the 80s, when affordable synths were pushing Eurorack into clunky past thing territory.
Let’s use an analogy: These boxes and modules are just like CRT-TVs (you know… “tubes”): clunky, expensive, stupid to handle, less convenience to make actual music, no saving of preferences, not compatible with most modern technology, eat up energy like me a pack of Oreos.
This thing here is probably better than most, not costing thousands to finally make a sound, but the demos are really hard sells. They really clinged to their “art”, “palette”, etc. motif there, didn’t they? Could have called it “Pocket Knife” to make a similar point (just as awful, yes).
