Artinoise, creators of the re.corder MIDI controller, have introduced the zefiro ‘smart reed’, an inexpensive USB-C gadget that transforms your smartphone into a musical instrument, or can be used as an expressive USB wind controller.
The zefiro is a flash-drive sized gadget that features an expressive MIDI breath controller, with a bite sensor and 3D accellerometers that can be used to add expression to your performance.
Here’s what they have to say about it:
“With Zefiro, musical creativity knows no bounds. You can explore a wide range of instruments, varying from timeless classics to quirky alternative sounds and modes of playing. The app transforms your phone into an intuitive, expressive instrument by simply blowing into Zefiro while covering virtual buttons on the screen. It’s effortless to learn and feels natural to play.
Zefiro also allows you to add effects, jam with friends, and play along with background music, anytime, anywhere. Plus, it includes built-in breathing exercises for mindfulness and relaxation.
For professionals, Zefiro doubles as a powerful MIDI breath controller, adding nuanced expressivity to live performances or studio sessions.”
Here’s the official intro video:

For those having trouble in their dating life
Would be curious to see if they can handle tonguing. N o examples given.
I would guess that tonguing works well.
Does it come with a spit valve?
Only if you have a waterproof phone.
the USB extension cable is a good idea.
The USB-C means that only the lastest (and most expensive) iPhone can connect to it.
Even the cheapest Android phone comes with USB-C. Since Years.
Yeah, but then you’re actually stuck with an Android phone.
Pass. Full stop.
Woah! Do we have to use it with a phone or can i plug it straight into my synth’s midi/usb?
The Zefira is class compliant, so it will work with anything that can host a usb controller. They claim that it responds to lip pressure as well. The Pro version has an accelerometer. There’s also a lightning/usb dongle that you can pick up with the Kickstarter.
$24? what’s not to like.
Class compliant – NICE. I have always had an obsession with the musical application of various flavours of wind. This will pair nicely with Mutable Instruments – Clouds for some incliment weather patching. ‘Windy Clouds’ could be the project name. BACKED
Now I’ll have to go work on my kazoo patch…
Seems interesting. There’s already the Ocarina iOS app, where you blow into the microphone. Perhaps the reed makes this more musically controllable or work better near loud noise, ie a band? The drool factor would prevent passing it to someone else though!
