Teenage Engineering Intros $2,299 OP-XY Synthesizer, Sequencer & Sampler

Teenage Engineering today introduced the OP-XY, a new portable instrument that features a powerful sequencer, synthesizer, and sampler.

It’s a little bit like an OP-Z on steroids. Here’s what they have to say about it:

“we know you’ve had wet fantasies about a no-compromise, dual-cpu boosted and fully rebuilt sequencer, sampler, and performance instrument, based on the much-loved workflow of the OP–Z.

now including built-in cv, effect sends, and a best-in-class dac. with 8 individual instrument tracks and 8 auxiliary tracks for controlling any external synthesizer, modular or otherwise, and adding effects. we dare to say it’s probably the most complete, portable sequencer ever built.

it’s here. it’s real. it’s black. and it’s got so much more than you’ve wished for.”

The basic form factor is the same as the OP-1 field, but the focus of the OP-XY is on ‘serious sequencing’.

  1. absolutely not, much no. fourfold price hike over op-z. op-1F was twofold. Might have gone for it if op-xy were twofold, but this is ableton push plus suite territory, *plus* an op-z. nonreplaceable battery does not help either.

  2. This is made for people who commute. You can scratch the itch and do it all neatly in one box.
But in the studio for real jamming, live sequencing…. This has nothing to offer but handicapping you into looking through a straw. Cirklon would be a better investment.

    1. Every electronic music gear manufacturer makes high-end gear for professionals, and it makes hobbyists brains explodes.

There are people whose time is more valuable than the money, and they buy whatever they think will be useful.

      It’s been this way forever.

          1. Absolutely you are right. I do not understand those TE gimmicks. And I no don’t want to.
And you have no idea what a “high-end for professionals” really means.

      1. “high-end gear for professionals” is a Moog One. This is just another TE hipster toy to get shilled to oblivion by the usual Youtubers. TE just riding on that Covid $1600 for an OP1 craze. You know it, I know it, the dude that isnt dancing on the second video knows it, we all know it.

    2. I buy quite a bit of higher end gear, this is not about how high the price is, but what you get for it. It makes no sense for just about anyone, considering similar products out there.

  3. Lovely design but $2300 are you serious. TE is a lifestyle brand moonlighting as a musical instrument company. On the plus side this ridiculous price means the good ideas in it will be adopted by other designers at a fraction of the cost.

People saying ‘it’s for professionals’ – GMAFB, the Octatrack is ~15 years old and there are many other super-flexible options on the market. It’s neat that it’s compact, portable, and battery powered, but you give up ergonomics, performance controls, and i/o.

    1. There are some good specs but considering you can get 2 MPC keys or 2 MPC LIve2 or 3 iPads with hundreds of great Apps and some accesories for less…

  4. An absolute beauty. Hard (ok, impossible) for me to justify at the price but as an “only instrument you have on a desert island” instrument? Yes, please.

Don’t be mad at TE; be mad at your salary/boss/economic system/parents/past decisions/whatever. They ask for what feels like ‘a lot’ for their instruments but 1) so does rolex/bmw/etc and 2) it’s not like they’re gauging thirsty people for a jug of water.

  5. I believe the earlier displayless model flopped hard and now TE are trying to make that money back!
This is of course a much better product but the peice compared to the competition makes no sense!

  6. This is fun. A computer music thingy that is not high-end at all – (of course). But if anybody finds a proper use for it – it has filled its purpose.

Personally I cannot use things like this – I need real keyboards and control. I do not need machines to make chords for me. But then I cannot blame Teenage Engineering for not living up to their name.

    The price? Totally fun.

    1. I on the other hand, don’t know how to make a chord (ambient producer) and enjoy an Omnipresent Lifestyle and an ironic moustache who’s upkeep costs more than tuition fees for an Ivy League institution. This will be pumped through Make Noise Bruxa and Mutable Clouds, modulated by 13x MakeNoise Maths (not a clone).

      Truelly I LOVE Teenage Engineering

  7. Why would someone buy a Mercedes when they could by two Corollas for the same price? I’m so angry at the price of Mercedes vehicles that I think anyone who would even consider buying one is an idiot and deserves ridicule. Don’t they know they could buy two Corollas for the same price?
