Love Hultén – a craftsman and designer that specializes in custom electronic instruments – shared this video demo of the SQRL-01 guitar.
Hultén creates custom instruments that build on existing designs, and often incorporating mid-century modern aesthetics and unexpected features. His designs are generally built as one-off custom designs, but they highlight that the electronic instrument space can be much broader and creative than what’s available from standard mass-market products.
In the case of the SQRL-01, though, Hultén is getting his design freak on – incorporating a motorized squirrel feeder into a unique synth guitar. Here’s a demo of the instrument in action. Note that it might cause a visceral reaction for some readers!
The SQRL-01 is built around these elements:
- Critter & Guitari – Pocket Piano 201
- Walrus Audio – Fundamental Ambient
- Speaker
- Motorized Squirrel Feeder
You can see more of Hultén’s designs at his site, where you can contact him about creating a custom synth design.

I find it sad that everything has to become a part of the commercialised hipster culture. Please make synthesisers great again, God bless Behringer for looking out for the poor.
How does Behringer help the poor?
I guess in the same way WalMart helps the poor.
And Hultén, like Hammacher-Schlemmer, helps the rich.
I’m sorry, what is this regarding?
I think he’s referring to Love Hulten, the designer who puts cheap synthesizers into expensive suits
it’s sad that folks can’t stand having both option – the cheap and affordable, and the artistic expression. i like Hulten’s work. i say give us MORE!
i buy behringer for it’s utility, and the nostalgia for *my* first modular. i also buy it because i can safely modify it. i certainly don’t think its ‘better’ than other gear. i was a hardware guy, i can *see* the ‘cheapnis’; inside and out, but it’s fine with me. i got what i paid for. lol. and the stuff does work!
this is like the Red Crab synth – a favorite!
The problem with Behringer was never the prices, it was/is the prices that the company follows. Objecting to that has nothing to do with economics and everything to do with ethics.
It’s sad that you can’t read a comment without drawing extreme notions
I never mentioned anything at all on those lines
The artist literally takes cheap synths and overhauls the exterior
I’ve seen his work myself at Superbooth. It’s cool but at the end of the day it’s still just a minilogue or whatever
If Cinderella would play a synth, this is what she would play.
I love squirrels! Catbeats is cool!
article has a typo, it’s spelled critter and guitari, not critter and guitar
Thanks for the feedback. I updated the post!
That came from the info on Hultén’s video, and we didn’t catch it. Maybe because ‘Critter & Guitar’ sort of captures the essence of this instrument!
