Supercritical Synthesizers has announced that the Redshift 6 Variable Character Synthesizer is now available.
In addition, synthesist Kebu shared this ‘shut up and play’ style video demo for the Redshift 6:
The Supercritical Redshift 6 combines technology from the company’s previous products, the Demon Core Oscillator and the Neutron Flux Filter. Each of the six voices features a DCO, with analog waveforms generated under digital control. The filter core is an analog 4-pole state variable filter, also digitally controlled, to “act like almost any classic vintage synthesizer filter and more”.
In addition to the oscillators and filters, Redshift 6 offers modulators, flexible voice routing, multitimbrality, MPE, and DSP effects.
Pricing and Availability:
The Supercritical Redshift 6 is available now, with a street price of about $1,349.
None of the synths in this general category sound bad at all. I just wonder how many non-Kebu-level players will own 15 of them and never get to the heart of what they can do. Gear lust can be a serious issue! OTOH, I can easily see Redshift 6 as a satellite being played by a main controller/workstation. There’s no debate about that sound making it a worthy group member.
I don’t know. Sounds like a Juno, but apparently everyone’s creating necrosynths nowadays ‘recreating the olden days” for synth collectors in their mid 50s. Sorry, if this sounded salty, but I don’t get a thing like this, which could have been a VST (please spare me the ‘muh analogue’ killer argument-myth). If this would somehow inspire creativity by how the layout of the synth is, fine. See Hydra or even a frickin’ Kaoss Pad. But this is a specialized MIDI controller to rock some Juno sounds available in this form or another in a million VSTs . /rant
I don’t think this demo does a great job of showcasing the synth’s abilities, but you couldn’t be more wrong about it
I am not “feeling” it. I am expecting some breathtaking sounds, but what i listen are some nice but pretty vanilla sounds. This is supposed to have such a flexible oscialltor and filter section, and yet all the demo’s including these are a touch “sweeter” than what a vst could sound like. What’s the problem with it? If it’s sound designers, just send it to me
and spare us the mostly untallented preset noodling youtubers..
I kind of hate to say it but I have to agree. It all sounds pretty flat in the video posted. I suppose there is more ‘there’ there but think it’ll take some more videos to prove it.
This bad demo kind of makes me want it more.
i’ve had my eye on this synth for a while, excited to start seeing coverage of it.
No USB-C is a dealbreaker, seems like a decent synth but USB-B is just ridiculous. Even the Roland Aira compacts and the Behringer micros use USB-C, seeing something like this on an instrument of this price really makes me wonder about the priorities of the manufacturer.
Never got why people are so very mad about, when there’s no USB-C. It’s small and more likely to be pulled out by accident on stage or performance. That’s why some DJ equipment comes with the USB-B plug. Also: Yeah just plug the cable in, whatever it is and stop looking at the source of your rage all the time? In the real world, no-one cares of potentially buying a high quality USB cable for 15 bucks when their gear costs a few hundreds or thousands. And you can get away with cheaper cables even. Just my thoughts.
Yeah i kind of agree. Being slighlty annoyed by a choice of usb i understand. But in a synth with midi? I don’t get it. It’s such a minor detail.
Actually it’s quite the opposite, USB-B is the most secure and reliable connector among all USB versions and this design choice is intentional. That’s why USB-C is the preferred connector in critical industrial applications, used by top brands like RME Audio and OWC, a leading manufacturer of professional USB hubs, uses a special Cling On USB-C adapter to enhance security because USB-C isn’t as physically reliable as USB-B. I’m really impressed that Supercritical made the smart choice to incorporate this.
I understand about USB-C. I’ve also accepted that I’m always going to have a box full of cords & adapters from 5 generations back. Don’t throw them out! My system works well, despite using three different era’s connectors. You have to configure that, just like you do with MIDI assignments and mixer sends. Keep your old format items for a few years, so you’ll be ready when USB-D and OmegaButt connectors start pushing them aside.
Nice Demo, maybe a bit too polite.
Now waiting for some soft deep ambient sounds or, on the other end, agressive distorted sound demos.
i would buy this only if it had usb-c
Redshift 6 sounds perfectly ’80s. It could have been used to score Time Bandits, Miami Vice, Legend, and every other film from that decade. Continuing the 21st Century universal theme of reinventing the wheel and nothing else. Even the President of the United States is just a cameo bit player from an ’80s movie.
