Zed AudioLab shared this take on the Blade Runner Main Titles, from the soundtrack by Vangelis.
The video features the UDO Super Gemini, an original synth design that shares some important features with the Yamaha CS-80, including a dual-layer synth engine, polyphonic aftertouch, and a ribbon controller – all of which are used in recreating the sounds of the Vangelis score.

binaurally banal.
Full and beautiful!
Very musical!!
UDO always delivers
I give the ribbon a lot of credit! Any 2-layered, detuned sawtooth wave thing with a sub oscillator and a decent reverb can sound like “instant Blade Runner” easily. Vangelis was just the first to go there in a big way. UDO does it well, but it also has the muscle to go far beyond that. Any synth that can’t at least come close is a wankfest.
Blade Runner and Tom Sawyer are to synthesisers what Smoke on the Water is to guitars
you forget ‘stairway to heaven’ and vanhalen licks. but yeah, that stuff is literally played out.
There was a whole discussion on the synth equivalent of Smoke on the Water on the latest Sonic Talk podcast. https://www.youtube.com/live/hTzo-RcTDdQ?feature=shared
A rightful shout out to Van Halen’s Jump. Another candidate for the hall of clichés.
“dual-layer synth engine, polyphonic aftertouch, and a ribbon controller”
Yes!! This is also why I keep wanting a Hydrasynth as a controller (and its digital synthesis engine is a nice bonus…)
On the Gemini side, digital oscillators-into-analog filters seems to be enjoying a well-deserved renaissance.
I didn’t do too badly using the Prophet Rev 2 – https://youtu.be/bBd1JJywDFY?si=x4ermkPNdDtqdPRh. Enjoy!
