Vangelis’s Blade Runner Soundtrack On The UDO Super Gemini

Zed AudioLab shared this take on the Blade Runner Main Titles, from the soundtrack by Vangelis.

The video features the UDO Super Gemini, an original synth design that shares some important features with the Yamaha CS-80, including a dual-layer synth engine, polyphonic aftertouch, and a ribbon controller – all of which are used in recreating the sounds of the Vangelis score.

  1. I give the ribbon a lot of credit! Any 2-layered, detuned sawtooth wave thing with a sub oscillator and a decent reverb can sound like “instant Blade Runner” easily. Vangelis was just the first to go there in a big way. UDO does it well, but it also has the muscle to go far beyond that. Any synth that can’t at least come close is a wankfest.

  2. “dual-layer synth engine, polyphonic aftertouch, and a ribbon controller”

Yes!! This is also why I keep wanting a Hydrasynth as a controller (and its digital synthesis engine is a nice bonus…)

On the Gemini side, digital oscillators-into-analog filters seems to be enjoying a well-deserved renaissance.
