Free Augmented Drumming Tool For Monome Norms, D2MS

Developer Phill Wilson let us know about D2MS, an ‘augmented drumming’ script for the Monome Norns platform.

D2MS (which Wilson says stands for Drums 2 Midi Synths, Samplers, Sequencers…) is the result of an online collaboration between Lines Forum members Wilson and Illges. It’s designed with performance and improvisation in mind, letting you process drum performance data to control sequences and execute a wide range of performance-altering functions.

Features:

  • Use up to 16 inputs (incoming midi notes from pads, triggers etc)
  • Each input can control up to 5 machine layers (MIDI note driving units) and 5 Trig Layers (utilities that modify a performance)
  • Over 10 Machine types including;
    • Basic –For playing melodies
    • Riff – Ideal for bass-lines
    • Chord – Great for pads
    • Fixed – For non-chromatic samples and percussion
    • Strum – A semi-manual arpeggios
    • Stack – A rotating chord pack
  • Over 12 Trig Types including;
    • Conductor – To move between patterns and change instruments
    • Direction – To change playback order
    • Fill – To randomize note sequences
    • CC – To turn things such as Midi FX on and off dynamically
    • Gears – To create cascades of movement
  • 4 pages of 4 track lanes, each up to 16 steps long that can be chained freely in up to 16 patterns for a total maximum track lane of 256 notes per lane
  • Full and detailed Midi CC automation and control through velocity
  • An On-grid Play surface for pattern design and “in-the-box” performances.
  • A root and scale system that can be modified on-the-fly during performance.

  1. Hi folks,

    Phill Wilson here, just a minor correction, I was the co-designer on the project, but it was the wonderful lines forum member Illges who was the Developer with all the cool coding skills 🙂 without him, this would still just be a “virtual manual” for a project that would never have existed !

  2. Had one and no matter which script, everything is cumbersome with mediocre results, connectivity and worst of all UI. Noise from the output was addressed with a hardware update, the DIY version still has it, scripts tend to suddenly not load on boot for some reason and if you want to know whats actually going on in the script as they call their “instruments” in 2 out of 3 cases you can guess, because manuals or proper descriptions are not part of the esoteric vibe found in the forum. /salt

    Save your bucks. Millions of free apps, plugins and tools which play better with other tools and don’t look and operate like a computer from the 80s for ants.

    1. Look up “shieldXL (DIY norns synthesizer kit)” if you want to build your own for cheap.
