UJAM and the Bob Moog Foundation have introduced Vox Humana, a recreation of the Polymoog 280A’s Vox Humana sound, immortalized in Gary Numan’s Cars and other legendary tracks.
The plugin is built on the sounds of the Polymoog 280A, sampled by synthesist and Youtube synth educator Alex Ball. With these recordings as the basis, the Bob Moog Foundation partnered with UJAM to transform them into a virtual instrument.

Steve Levine’s drum computers, Gary Numan’s vox humana sound, analog synths with warm retro sounds all over the place… Nostalgia sells, obviously. At least to old men, I guess…
That’s right grasshopper, go back to your hydrasynth! ?
Synthesizers sound the way they do because PHYSICS. We’re hitting a certain wall. Everything that can be re-presented has mostly gotten the treatment. We’re not going to hear much in the way of new sounds. The “trick” is to work at becoming a decent player.
MPE is a natural and helpful new twist, but we can now synthesize the sound of an alligator dragging his butt over a plate glass window if we like. Its up to us to build our own color pallettes. Besides, I can create a Vox Humana patch in a snap. Its right out of the stringer realm, with a dab of vocal formant.
That phaser sounds pretty good, and hollow mode too!
I owned the Polymoog Keyboard, a slimmed down version of the full synth. Vox Humana was the first preset, but it sounded different. There was a slow fade in and long release time. Very ethereal. I used to record and play it backwards on tape.
