Polyend Opens Tracker, Tracker+ And Tracker Mini To Custom Firmware

Polyend has shared the firmware source code for its original Tracker, Tracker+ and Tracker Mini, with the release of Tracker Community Edition 1.0.

The move transforms the company’s hardware samplers from closed platforms into instruments that users and developers can modify, extend and build upon.

The release includes an updated firmware version with SD-card streaming for longer samples, additional sequencing controls, six Sample Editor effects and generators, and new wavetable envelopes and LFOs. Tracker+ and Tracker Mini also gain two new synthesizer engines, CHIP and DIRT.

More significantly, Polyend has released developer tools for creating custom Sample Editor plugins and synthesizer engines. Developers can now explore new instruments and effects designed specifically for the Tracker hardware, while users can build and share customized firmware. A hardware recovery system also provides a way to restore a working firmware image if an experimental build fails.

Polyend has also revised the license to an MIT-based model that permits commercial reuse of individual code components and SDKs, while restricting commercial clones of the complete Tracker application and retaining separate restrictions on proprietary precompiled synthesizer libraries.

Why It Matters:

Opening the firmware gives the Tracker platform a potential future beyond the features and development priorities of its original manufacturer. Independent developers can create new synthesis engines, effects and workflow changes, while users gain greater control over how their instruments evolve.

This means that the Tracker can have a future that is independent of Polyend.

Pricing & Availability:

Tracker Community Edition 1.0 is available as a free firmware download from Polyend’s official GitHub repository. It supports the original Tracker, Tracker+ and Tracker Mini.
